Move beyond basic paperwork. We help organisations build a strong Occupational Health and Safety Management System that protects staff, satisfies auditors, strengthens tender performance, and reduces legal and financial risk.
A 15 minute call to assess your safety risks and legal compliance.
Is a Weak Safety Culture Putting Your Business at Risk?
Health and safety failures do not just cost money; they damage reputations, trigger investigations, increase insurance premiums, and expose directors to liability. Many organisations rely on generic risk assessments or outdated policies that do not reflect real working conditions. ISO 45001 provides structure, but most companies need help understanding how to implement it correctly.
Fear of Incidents
Concern about workplace injuries, lone worker risks, or accidents that could lead to HSE involvement.
Rising Insurance Costs
Premiums increasing due to inconsistent or poorly evidenced safety practices.
Tender Failures
Losing contracts where ISO 45001 or structured health and safety systems are required.
Tick Box Safety
Risk assessments and procedures exist but are not understood, followed, or reviewed.

We already have CHAS or SafeContractor (SSIP). Do we still need ISO 45001?
SSIP schemes show baseline compliance. ISO 45001 is a full management system that proves you actively plan, implement, monitor, and improve safety. Many buyers now expect both.
How is ISO 45001 different from ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 focuses on service quality and consistency. ISO 45001 focuses on protecting people, managing hazards, and complying with health and safety law. Many organisations use both to demonstrate full operational control.
Is ISO 45001 a legal requirement?
No. However, it is one of the strongest ways to prove compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other regulations because it shows how you manage risks, responsibilities, and monitoring in practice.
Does ISO 45001 cover mental health?
Yes. ISO 45001 requires you to manage occupational health and safety risks, which explicitly includes psychosocial risks like workplace stress, bullying, and mental wellbeing.
How long does it take to get certified?
For most SMEs, the process takes 3-6 months. This allows time to build the system, implement it, run it for a period (to generate evidence), and complete the internal and external audits.
Can small businesses get ISO 45001?
Absolutely. The standard is scalable. For small businesses, the system should be simple and proportionate to your risks. We specialise in keeping it practical for smaller teams.
What is the role of workers in ISO 45001?
Worker participation is a key requirement. You must involve staff in hazard identification, risk assessment, and decision-making regarding safety. It cannot just be top-down.
Does it apply to contractors and visitors?
Yes. Your management system must cover anyone under your control or affecting your activities, including sub-contractors, visitors, and the public.
How often do we need an audit?
Internal audits should be conducted at planned intervals (usually annually). External surveillance audits by your certification body typically happen once a year to maintain your certificate.
What is the difference between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001?
OHSAS 18001 is the old standard and has been withdrawn. ISO 45001 replaced it, placing greater emphasis on leadership, worker participation, and proactive risk management.
Does ISO 45001 guarantee zero accidents?
No system can guarantee zero accidents. However, ISO 45001 provides a robust framework to significantly reduce the likelihood of incidents and mitigate their impact if they do occur.
Can we integrate this with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001?
Yes. All modern ISO standards follow the "Annex SL" structure, meaning they share the same high-level format. This makes it easy to create one Integrated Management System (IMS) covering Quality, Safety, and Environment.
What happens if we fail an audit?
You rarely "fail" outright. You will typically receive "non-conformances" which you must fix within a set timeframe. We support you in rectifying these to ensure certification is granted.
Do we need a dedicated Health & Safety Manager?
Not necessarily. While you need a "competent person," this can be an external consultant (like us) supporting a member of your internal team who takes ownership of the system.
What are the main benefits for tendering?
It provides an internationally recognised badge of safety excellence. It often allows you to bypass lengthy pre-qualification questionnaires (PQQs) and score higher in the technical evaluation of bids.
