Feeling Overwhelmed by the ACS Audit Process?
The SIA's Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) is the definitive standard for quality in the UK security industry. But achieving it is a complex challenge. The Self-Assessment Workbook (SAW) is extensive, the evidence required for all 89 indicators is immense, and a failed assessment costs you time, money, and valuable contracts.

How long does the preparation process take?
Every client is different. After our initial Gap Analysis, we can give you a realistic timeline, but we typically prepare a company for its assessment within 6-8 weeks.
What documents do we need to provide?
You will need to provide your core business documents, such as insurance certificates, staff vetting files (BS 7858), and payroll records. We use these to build your compliant system.
What is the difference between ACS and ISO 9001?
ACS is the UK security industry-specific standard. ISO 9001 is an international standard for Quality Management. ACS incorporates many quality principles, and we can advise if you need one or both.
Do you help with annual ACS renewals?
Yes. We provide ongoing support to ensure you maintain your accreditation year after year. We help you keep your management system up to date with any changes in the ACS standard or your business operations.
Can you help if we have already failed an audit?
Absolutely. We specialise in turning failed assessments into passes. We will review your audit report, fix the non-conformances, and prepare you for a successful re-assessment.
What are the current SIA application fees?
As of the latest update, the application fee depends on the number of licensable staff. It typically ranges from roughly £2,500 to over £8,000 per year for larger firms. We can help you calculate the exact cost for your business size.
Is there a minimum trading period before applying?
You generally need to have been trading for at least 12 months. However, there are pathways for newer businesses if you can demonstrate robust systems and financial stability. We can advise on your eligibility.
Do all company directors need to be SIA licensed?
Yes. The SIA requires that all directors and partners of the company hold a valid SIA license, usually a non-frontline license at minimum, to ensure they meet the 'Fit and Proper' criteria.
How many staff do I need to be eligible for ACS?
Technically, the minimum is 5 licensable staff. If you have fewer than this, you may still apply, but the process and cost structure differ slightly. We help small firms navigate this requirement.
Can I use sub-contractors for ACS contracts?
Yes, but ACS companies are expected to sub-contract primarily to other ACS companies. If you use non-ACS sub-contractors, there are strict rules and limited allowances you must follow to avoid non-conformance.
What is the difference between Standard and PaceSetters?
A 'Standard' pass meets the minimum ACS requirements (zero score). 'PaceSetters' are the top 15% of scoring companies in the industry. We can help you build a strategy to not just pass, but achieve a high score to join the elite.
Does the auditor visit our client sites?
Yes. Part of the assessment involves visiting a sample of your active sites to interview staff and check that your procedures (like assignment instructions and uniform policies) are being followed in the real world.
How do I maintain my accreditation score?
Maintenance requires consistent internal auditing, management review meetings, and keeping all records (screening, training, site visits) up to date. We provide monthly retainer packages to handle this administration for you.
What sectors does the ACS cover?
The ACS covers Security Guarding, Door Supervision, CCTV (Public Space Surveillance), Close Protection, Cash and Valuables in Transit, and Key Holding. You can apply for approval in one or multiple sectors.
How does ACS help with insurance premiums?
Because ACS companies are viewed as lower risk due to their verified quality systems and staff vetting, many insurance brokers offer reduced premiums for liability and indemnity insurance to approved contractors.
